It is colorless transparent or white to yellowish diamond crystal. It is easily soluble in water and liquid ammonia, slightly soluble in glycerin and ethyl alcohol.
Sodium nitrate is used as raw material in enamel industry as fluxing agent, oxidizing agent and in preparing enamel powder, in glass industry as decolorising agent, defoamer, clarifying agent and oxidation flux in glass industry, in inorganic industry in producing other nitrates, in food industry as for meat processing, in dyeing industry as raw material for producing picric acid and dyes, in machinery industry as metal cleaner, in analytical chemistry as chemical reagent and in producing explosives.
